Breast Implant Incision Methods

Incisions

The incision method for your breast implants is a major factor for you to consider. It should be one of the first things you decide upon. There are several different factors that go into your choice of the incision placement. It is not all about the scar size, though that is one of the critical issues. Each method has a different scar placement and can result in a variety of side effects. The breast augmentation forums are filled with sisterly advice on this topic.

Breast implant doctors offer 4 main areas for incisions to place your breast implants.

- Through your nipple, around the aereola

- Under the arm, tucked inside your armpit

- Under the breast fold

- Through the belly button, also known as TUBA

These different incision method choices each have their benefits and challenges. Please be sure to reseach each of these methods with each of the benefits and problems.

Some breast implant options are not available with all of the incision methods. As an example, the transumbilical (TUBA), or belly button breast augmentation method, cannot be done with silicone breast implants because the implant arrives from the factor prefilled. In the TUBA method your doctor will place the implant through the belly button, up through your belly. They send the empty implant shell up through a tool called an endoscope and then fill the saline breast implant from there. However, each of the other incision options are available for both saline and silicone. While the scar is generally about one inch larger with silicone implants, it can still be hidden well especially when done through the nipple. Be prepared to talk your doctor's language by doing some research on the internet first to see what method is right for you.

One of the important factors you should consider is how the breast implant incision will affect your body. For example, if you choose to have the breast implant incision through your nipple, you may very well loose some or all of your nipple sensitivity. In general the further you stay away from the nipple, the more likely you will retain your sensitivity. On the other hand, the further you go away from the nipple, the more difficult the implant is to place. In the TUBA method, there are some reports of implants placed poorly.

Ask your surgeon about their preferred types of breast implant incision methods. Every breast implant surgeon will have a preferred incision method, one in which they are most practiced and most familiar with. Importanly, if you choose the transumbilical incision, you will need to find a doctor who is trained in the practice. This type of incision is more common every year, but not every doctor can or will do it. Most plastic surgeons offer all of the other incision types.

Plan a list of questions for your doctor, including how they plan on dealing with the scarring. While all incisions will leave some sort of scar, new healing products can actually speed the healing and reduce the scar. Ask your doctor to see some photos of scars left after their procedures. If you are prepared with these questions you will be better prepared for your consultation.
