Breast augmentation has become the most common plastic surgery, even above liposuction. What has caused this explosion? Over the last several decades people have really changed their attitude. One measure might be turning on the television and listen to what's being talked about. Real Housewives aside (talked about every episode), breast implant discussion is involved every day on some TV show or another. Shows like Dr. 90210 went a long way to popularize not only breast augmentation, but plastic surgery in general. What has been the cause of this social acceptance?

Everyone wants choices, and if this is a choice to enhance ourselves, why not? Having personal choices means that we can take advantage of the surgical advances and improve ourselves in the way we want to. As women have chosen breast augmentation for an aesthetic purpose, the choice is now generally accepted. Regardless of whether or not it should be the case or shouldn't be, the fact is the choice should exist. Thankfully it does for women that want it. There simply is no reason a woman should not have this choice if it is available.

There seems to be a lot of talk around how breast implants can improve your self-esteem. Do you think it really does? I have spent extensive time studying this by reading dozens of articles on the subject and I think this is true, but with a major proviso that you really need to know about. Breast augmentation in and of itself does not improve a woman's self-esteem. Just because you have bigger breasts is not going to cure a poor self-image, like it or not. The part of this that is based in truth is that if a woman already has a high self-esteem, breast implants can have the effect of improving an already solid self-esteem. The exact opposite might be true, in fact, for women with an already poor self-esteem.

With a low self-esteem already, a woman might find herself dissapointed by the results of breast augmentation. Breast augmentation can be a factor, but it cannot fix low self-esteem. She might have hoped for something to happen to her personally that in fact never occurs. There are some studies out that actually link breast augmentation to suicide in these cases. You simply cannot look for something external to improve a poor self-image. A low self-esteem is better dealt with through a counselor than with a plastic surgeon!
