Breast Implant Revision - Common Reasons
Patients undergo breast implant revision surgery for various reasons. In some cases, patients want to decrease or increase the size of the implant. In others, the implant must be replaced because it has reached it lifespan. Here are the most common reasons for breast implant revision surgery.
Change Size
The most common reason why women undergo revisional surgery is to change the size of the breasts. Many women who undergo augmentation wish that they had gone a little bigger. This is because immediately after surgery, the patient has significant swelling in the breasts for a couple of weeks. Once the swelling goes down and the implants settle, patients may wish they had chosen a larger implant size.
Many women are now trading in their implants for a smaller size. In the 1990s, the trend was to increase the size of the breasts to a D cup or higher. Today, C cups are the most popular size.
Misplaced Implants
The implant can end up being too high or low for a few reasons. An inexperienced surgeon could place the implant too high during surgery, or the pectoralis muscle could contract or scar tissue could form causing the implant to move up. The implant could also cause the skin and tissues to stretch, making the implant hang too low.
Capsular Contracture
Capsular contracture refers to the formation of scar tissue around the implant. The excess scar tissue inhibits the implants ability to move, gives it an unnatural appearance, and makes it feel hard to the touch. In severe cases, capsular contracture can cause pain. Surgery is required to remove the scar tissue and replace the implant.
Rupture
Like all products, breast implants do have a shelf life. Implants should be replaced about every 10 years to avoid rupture. If an implant does rupture, the patient should see a plastic surgeon to have the implant removed and avoid potential health risks. During surgery, the cosmetic surgeon can replace the implant with one of a different size, texture, or shape, and place it using the latest techniques.
Breast implant revision surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. Most patients are able to return to work and most daily activities within a week of surgery. If you are considering undergoing this procedure, consult a local plastic surgeon to schedule a consultation.
